About the US Citizenship Civics Test

The civics portion of the naturalization test is oral: a USCIS officer reads each question aloud and you answer verbally. The real test has no answer choices — this quiz uses multiple choice only to make browser practice quick.

Two versions of the test are in use in 2026, and which one you take depends on when you filed Form N-400.

Which Test Version Will I Take?

If you filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, you take the 2008 test: up to 10 questions from a pool of 100, and the officer stops once you answer 6 correctly. If you filed on or after October 20, 2025, you take the 2025 test: up to 20 questions from a pool of 128, and the test stops at 12 correct (pass) or 9 incorrect (fail).
